The Verulam Documentation Centre which is the custodian of this building was founded by the Verulam Historical Society in the year 2002. It is a research centre and historical archive that offers its resources to students, researchers, tourists and the general public. This building wll be used as a reasearch facility and a museum. The small town of Verulam in KwaZulu Natal forms an important part of the Inanda Heritage Route , it is known for its Indian ,Methodist and its agricultural heritage. In 2014 the EThekwini Municipality set out to identify a new structure to house the town's public archives. The building selected for this was the old Verulam Library building. This building was built originally in 1857 by the Wesleyan settlers and served as a library, a lecture room and a meeting place for the settlers. This is the second oldest building in Verulam and it is surrounded by other local icons like Verulam Anniversary Park, the Methodist Church and the newly refurbished Inanda Magistrates Court.
