Our firm was invited to work in collaboration with eThekwini City Architects to add two additional floors onto existing four storey office block within the existing Municipal Electricity complex.
The main function of this building is that it controls electricity supply, shortages etc. of the entire city.
The whole design exercise involved the understanding of the functions that occur inside first and then the walls and roof just embrace the functions within.
So in essence the "form had to follow the function" coupled with other challenges like building on top of an existing building which will have to remain functional during entire construction period, applying green design principles and sustainable interior and architectural solutions .
