Our firm was initially appointed in 2009 to do a complete interior refurbishment of the train station for the preparation 2010 Fifa Soccer World cup.

Durban station was built in the 1970's and the spaces designed were heavily segregated to accommodate the segregation of different race groups. This meant that the station had a lot of duplicated and unutilised non- functional spaces that we had to integrate and enhance the efficient usage of the station.

The upgrade included the revamp of the main circulation concourse, the ticket offices, platforms and ablutions etc.

We were also requested to give a new meaning to the train station and to influence the negative perceptions that were associated with the use of public transport with particular reference to trains. The project budget was finished within the stipulated budget of R75 million and on programme for utilization during the 2010 Fifa World cup.

Our second appointment in 2012 was to create a master plan for the station taking into account the urban fabric and nodes surrounding the station and to enhance the interiors of the station as it incorporates multi functions under one umbrella.

The entire lower ground is used as platforms and the balance as huge warehousing space for national Tenants like Game, Mr Price, etc.

The main concourse level is mainly retail with major anchor tenants like Shoprite Checkers, pharmacy, offices, etc. In this assignment we had to introduce new ways of linking the interior and exterior spaces without noticing the differences between the different zones of this huge development.

The master plan will be a guiding document for developments to occur within the next 20 years.
